A Guide to Abalone Shell Jewellery Treasures of Brazil
Published on  Updated on

Have you seen our range of abalone shell jewellery, handmade in Brazil using the beautiful Golden Grass?

Abalone shell jewellery became rather popular in the 1960s and 1970s, due to it being rather inexpensive.

Jewellers began to set the shell into silver jewellery and it quickly became popular.

In this blog post, I’ll explore what abalone shell is, how to wear it and where to find it…

What is abalone shell?

Abalone itself is a sea mollusc, like a sea snail with feet and tentacles, generally found in cold, coastal waters.

Abalone molluscs feed on seaweed and kelp, the different varieties of which attribute to the vibrant shade of turquoise, green, blue, pink, purple, and gold you find in abalone shells.

The shells are extremely durable, made up of layer upon layer of calcium carbonate and protein, making them ideal for use in jewellery, which is what the shells are most commonly used for.

Although it is mainly the shells we use in jewellery, abalone can also form pearls. However, abalone pearls are very rare, in fact, only one natural abalone pearl is found in every half million shells.

What does abalone shell look like?

As I mentioned, the captivating colours of the sea found in abalone shells is due to the variety of seaweed they feed on.

The iridescent shells can vary in shape and size (anything up to 7 inches in length!) and no two are ever the same.

The shells shimmer with shades of turquoise, green, blue, pink, purple, and gold, making abalone shell jewellery the perfect gift for ocean-lovers as they mimic the calming waves of the sea.

How to wear abalone shell jewellery

This beautiful, iridescent shell is flattering on all skin tones so is suitable for anyone.

A simple abalone shell bracelet adds a touch of style and charm to any outfit. Or, you can go all out with a bolder, more eye-catching pair of abalone shell earrings and co-ordinating bracelet.

However you choose to wear your abalone jewellery, be sure to stand out as you shimmer in the sunlight.

Caring for Abalone Jewellery

Abalone shell is super strong and durable, but there are a few things you can do to keep it looking its best!

Avoid exposure to too much sunlight which can cause the colours to fade.

Finish off your makeup before wearing your abalone shell jewellery. This will keep your jewellery safe from any damage that hair spray or makeup products could cause. Similarly, when removing makeup, make sure you have already removed your jewellery.

Use mild soap and warm water to clean any dirt and grime build up and don’t use any harsh chemicals.

Store your abalone shell jewellery in a cool place away from direct sunlight or heat. If it gets wet, make sure you dry it with a cloth before putting it away.
