Understanding how to care for and protect your treasured jewellery can make a world of difference in maintaining its beauty.

Just as the sun’s harmful rays can damage our skin, light and heat can affect a colored gemstone’s durability and color. Over time, and in excess, they can also fade or damage some gemstones, such as amethyst, kunzite, topaz and shell cameos. Pearls and other delicate materials, such as ivory, will bleach under extreme exposure to light. Other gems, especially amber, can darken over time when exposed to too much light.

KEEP YOUR JEWELLERY AWAY FROM CHEMICALS AND WATER

The basic rule is to put your jewellery on last and take it off first. This means finishing off your makeup before wearing the jewellery. This will keep your jewellery safe from any damage that hair spray or makeup products could cause. Similarly, when removing makeup, make sure you have already removed your jewellery.

SAFELY STORE YOUR JEWELLERY

Keep your jewellery in a cool place away from direct sunlight or heat. Never keep it in the bathroom, because it has high humidity and can oxidize the plated gold. Heat may alter the metal setting or could cause cracks into the stone.

If your jewellery gets wet, make sure you dry it with a cloth before put it away.
