Buriti Jewellery | Why we love it... Treasures of Brazil
Published on  Updated on

You may have noticed that a lot of our products are made from the fibres and material of the Buriti tree, a very important tree in my home country.

In this blog post, I’ll explain why this tree is so amazing, where it features in our jewellery and other collections, and what a fantastic impact its use has on protecting our planet and the people in it.

The Buriti Tree

The Buriti tree can be found in a very important area of Brazil known as The Cerrado. The Cerrado is a huge, tropical eco-region and the Buriti tree, a type of palm tree, grows in the swamp regions here.

The Buriti tree (pronounced bur-ree-chee), also known as the moriche palm, is thought by natives to be sacred because of the wonderful nutrients it contains, and because of the vast array of uses it has.

Let’s look at some of the things the Buriti tree is used for…

  • The palm leaves of the Buriti tree can grow up to 3 metres in diameter and are used to cover roofs.
  • The fruit of the Buriti tree is edible and is extremely rich in essential fatty acids (more on this later). The fruit is also dried and ground into a flour and the pulp often used in the juices and jams with a high vitamin C content.
  • The fibres of the Buriti tree are used in jewellery making, for fishing nets, ropes, belts, hats, baskets and make fantastic hammocks!
  • Larvae from an insect which develops inside a felled trunk are eaten too! They’re delicious and when eaten raw they taste like butter.
  • Openings can be made in the trunk of the Buriti tree where rainwater accumulates, ferments, then produces a delicious alcoholic drink.
  • The trunks of the Buriti tree are used as posts, bridges, and in the construction of rural buildings.

Do you know of any other tree that offers so much?

Buriti at Treasures of Brazil

We LOVE Buriti here at Treasures of Brazil and continue to use it in our jewellery and beauty products as it helps to boost small local communities in Brazil by creating a new source of jobs, and ensuring that forests and trees are worth more standing than cut.

You’ll find Buriti in our earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings and beauty oils

The beauty of the golden strands of the Buriti fibres gives a warm elegance to our jewellery.

Check out our Buriti collection here.

Our Amazonian Buriti oil is organically sourced from the rainforests of Brazil, where it’s derived from the fruit of the Buriti Tree, known in Brazil as the ‘tree of life’.

Rich in fatty acids as well as vitamins A and E, Buriti Oil has strong hydrating properties. This makes it an ideal, natural ingredient for moisturising the skin and taming dry, frizzy hair. Get yours here.
